MISSION: To provide financial assistance to recent high school graduates and college students enabling them to pursue academic studies in the areas of business, business administration, science or engineering at an accredited institution of higher learning within the United States of America.
HISTORY: Dorethea N. Hornbuckle, community activist and businesswoman, illustrated leadership, strength, loyalty and determination when it came to helping others. As the 16th National President of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Hornbuckle’s commitment to education, community service and excellence is memorialized through the Dorethea N. Hornbuckle Memorial Scholarship. Founded in 2005, the Dorethea N. Hornbuckle Memorial Scholarship Fund (DNHMS) was established to provide financial assistance to college students in the form of academic scholarships. Annual scholarships are provided to high school graduates or college students pursuing a career in business, business administration, science, or engineering. Mrs. Hornbuckle was a devoted and active member of the business and professional women’s organization, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. The sorority offers community programs, which focuses on educational, social and career development of students.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION: Each year, Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. will award the Dorethea N. Hornbuckle Memorial Scholarship to a worthy student enabling them to pursue or continue academic studies in the field of business, business administration, science, or engineering at an institution of higher learning of their choice located in the United States of America. The DNHMS is a one time award that provides a college scholarship up to $3,000 for the academic year for students pursing a degree at a four-year institution. Upon receipt of enrollment verification, the scholarship will be awarded and made payable to the recipient’s educational institution.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: This scholarship is available through local chapters only. A chapter can submit the name of only one applicant. Applicants must meet the following requirements to apply for the Dorethea N. Hornbuckle Memorial Scholarship. You are eligible only if you meet ALL eligibility requirements.
• Undergraduate (full-time) student or high school student transitioning to college
• Pursuing a degree in Business, Business Administration, Science or Engineering
• Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)
• Attending or planning to attend a post-secondary, accredited institution
• Community service involvement within past 12-months with certified documentation
Contestant with the supervision of sponsoring chapter must mail his/her Application Packet to the National President Elect by March 1. The Application Packet must include the following:
a. Student Application Form
b. A current official/certified academic transcript with SAT/ACT score
c. Two letters of recommendation
d. A 300-500 word autobiographical essay that includes career aspirations, leadership
experiences and significant achievements
e. Family income documentation (Recent copy of w2 Form and/or IRS 1040)
