To unite in a sisterhood qualified business and professional women who will encourage, inspire, nurture, and assist persons engaged in business vocations.
Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Psi Chapter seeks to (1) unite in a sisterhood qualified business and professional women; (2) promote increased interest in business education among high school and college girls; (3) encourage the development of leadership; and (4) establish and promote civic and social service activities for youth and adults.
In 1929, Mrs. Lola M. Parker of Chicago, Illinois founded Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, a national business and professional women's organization. The sorority was established to offset the results caused by the great depression and to add prestige to career businesswomen and the field of business. In July 1936, Psi Chapter was chartered with 14 wonderful women of Dallas. Mrs. Janye C. Tillman and Alma I. Mackey remained active members of the sorority until they passed away in June of 2000. Psi Chapter has continued the vision of Mrs. Parker by maturing into a chapter that stimulates, motivates and fosters growth of its membership while volunteering services throughout the metroplex. Psi Chapter is currently celebrating 85 years of sisterhood and service to the Dallas community.
In 1974, Dorethea N. Hornbuckle became a member of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Psi Chapter. She started out with a vision for the organization and was elected Chapter President in 1975. Under her leadership, she:
- Developed and held the 1st President’s Workshop
- Held the 1st Chat and Chew
- Installed the 1st honorary member, Soror Julia Scott-Reed
- Presented the 1st Business Week Program honoring Black Women
Entrepreneurs, and
- Started the Adopt-a-School Program
Soror Hornbuckle loved her sorority and worked on nearly every Iota program and project. In 1979 she was selected as the Local and Regional Soror of the Year and competed for the National title. She served as Southwestern Regional Treasurer from 1977 to 1981.
Soror Hornbuckle became National President-Elect in 1989, where she worked tirelessly providing many innovative leadership conferences. The pinnacle of achievement for Soror Hornbuckle came in 1991 when she became the 16th National President of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. She served two terms and was a dynamic, visionary leader who initiated many projects that continue today. Among her accomplishments:
- Initiated the RUSH acronym “Rounding Up Sorors in a Hurry”
- Increased membership nationwide, including a new chapter in Texarkana, TX
- Initiated the turtle as the Sorority mascot
- Installed Mrs. Isabel Cottrell as National Honorary Soror
- Our Business Month Award was named after her
Her most compelling words to members of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. were:
“I am one, I am only one, I can’t do everything, but I can do something
What I can do, I ought to do and with the help of God, I will do.”
After completing her term as National President, she chaired the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) National Convention. Later she was elected to the NCNW National Executive Board, a first for an Iota Soror.

For there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather,
To cheer one on the tedious way,
To fetch one if one goes astray,
To lift one if one totters down,
To strengthen whilst one stands.
Sorority membership provides a lifetime of learning and involvement. Iota Phi Lambda provides its members with a climate for growth and development of leadership skills and talents. When you join Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, you not only join a network of graduate chapters across the nation, but more importantly, you join a sisterhood of African American women dedicated to the ideals of sisterhood, friendship, and professional development. Sorority membership is a lifetime commitment, requiring time, dedication, and resources but it also rewards its members in providing a nurturing environment in which to develop and share their skills and talents. As a professional sisterhood, eligibility for membership in Iota Phi Lambda is based on academic achievement, professional accomplishment, and civic involvement.
Iota Phi Lambda believes membership in a sorority is voluntary and a matter of mutual selection. Membership in Iota is by invitation of the local chapters. Each chapter schedules its own membership recruitment period during the programming year where women can learn about the organization, the chapter and local events.
